What Diana will be doing at DIY DAYS

Building Next Gen Comics

With the collapse of the economy and the rise of digital distribution the old model comic book industry has found itself in an existential crisis. Past reliance on other media to subsidize it has left us with a landscape where making and marketing comics for comics’ sake has become increasingly difficult. Sound gloomy? Not if you look at this as an opportunity to rebuild the medium in favor of the creator and the idea. It’s time for comics to go back to being punk rock.

DIY DAYS asks Diana

What are you currently working on that you’re excited about?

I’m in an embarrassment of creative riches right now, and collaborating with some supremely talented folks. I’m working with Zach Mortensen of Ghost Robot on an amazing (IMHO) cross platform project that we are going to unleash in some form at some point next year (darn our NDAs). Scotty Iseri of “Scotty Got an Office Job” fame, has created a format that combines interactivity with narrative storytelling and gaming to help kids learn math and we are in the midst of completing its prototype.  And with Ellie Lee & Peter Dowd, recent winners of Tribeca Film Institute’s transmedia award, we are beginning design work on Chinafornia.

What are some of your favorite sites and / or mobile apps and brief why?

Twitter. I am all about it. I follow some intriguing individuals that range in topics from science, technology, digital media, gaming, film, economics and the NY Giants. Sites that are my daily stop include Venture Beat, AdAge, GamesIndustry.biz, Deal Fatigue, io9, The Mary Sue, Shadow and Act, Women and Hollywood. I try to keep up with everything that effects my business and also fascinates me.

What are you currently watching, reading or playing?

I love TV so the fall season is a killer on my dvr as I try to watch everything at least once. Suffice to say the new kids to the small screen have nothing on Breaking Bad, Justified, Venture Bros, The League, Boardwalk Empire, Being Human and South Park.  I just finished reading Echo by Terry Moore and revisited Warren Ellis’ Transmetropolitan. I’m currently having my mind shattered by Grant Morrison’s Supergods (a must read). I’m a video game addict and therefore do not have any systems in my house. But I get my fix via my friends who supervise my play. I’m a fan of Portal, LA Noire and Heavy Rain.
